Filling a glass or plastic shape with layers of Alum Bay’s 21 shades of sand has been a tradition since the mid-1800s when Queen Victoria was presented with a special souvenir. Today, it’s a fond childhood memory for many.

In order to protect the cliff for future generations, guests are no longer able to collect their own sand, but can still create their own unique sand ornaments in The Sand Shop. Choose from a variety of shapes to fill yourself or buy a ready-filled item with handcrafted designs created by our very own sand expert.
Join in this age-old tradition and take one home as a wonderful reminder of your holiday on the Isle of Wight or as a fantastic gift for someone special. During the winter months, you can still buy ready-filled sand shapes in our Pier Head shop.
Due to our environmental policy of only collecting sand from natural cliff falls, there may not always be 21 shades of sand available.
A Great Family Day Out!
As we are a big family we bought the supersaver tickets to go on chairlift. This was amazing, I am not good with heights but it was very gentle and the views were stunning. Alum bay is gorgeous, we were lucky with the weather and spent about an hour on the beach...Lovely day out, something you should see if you go to the Isle of Wight

We visited as a large family group and went on the cables cars down to the beach, this was great fun and we all agreed we would do it again on our next holiday.
